Appen is pleased to announce that Dorota Iskra will be speaking at the GALA (Globalization and Localization Association) 2014 Conference in Istanbul, March 23-26. GALA is the worldwide voice for the language industry and a resource for the language business. The association supports its members and the language industry by creating communities, championing standards, sharing knowledge, and advancing technology. GALA is the world’s largest localization trade association with around 360 member companies. Dr. Iskra's presentation will cover how companies can work with languages that have no established standard for orthography, vocabulary, or grammar. This problem, while relevant to some minority languages in Europe, is particularly prevalent in Asian and African languages from Arabic to Pashto to Urdu. In order to create speech and language products for these communities, one needs to take these linguistic preferences into account. Her presentation describes methodologies that Appen has developed when working in non-standardized languages.
